Electronic recycling is where one person can make a big difference. Taking your computers and electronics to a qualified recycler makes a bigger impact on the environment than you realize!
When we recycle electronic components reusable materials are recovered to be used in manufacturing. Recovering materials gives us a chance to make new electronics out of the old. With enough recycling we will no longer rely on mining to produce electronics. In other words, we can save the environment by recycling more. During the recycling process we can recover about 15% of the gold that they use to create the electronics. This means 85% comes from mining the Earth’s natural resources.
Toxic chemicals including lead, mercury, cadmium, and chromium make up many electronics. Dumping these into the environment releases chemicals which can destroy the environment. Old CRT monitors can contain between 4 to 8 pounds of lead. Exposure to lead can cause widespread health issues for both humans and animals.
